I opted to listen to the audiobook. It took two separate occasions. The first time, I was disappointed because I was expecting something different. With the second listen, I was able to understand more. This wasn't Precious' story. It was Abdul's story. His story wasn't anything like his mother's.

The Kid is a journey through Abdul's life. At times, it was rather difficult to differentiate what was "real" from his dreams/fantasies. Abdul suffers from abuse similar to his mother and evolves into a monster. He essentially continued the curse his mother worked to escape.
